There are a lot of problems in the story, but I think the main one is the money. Lakshmi's family is poor as many families in India thats why Lakshmi has to go work on the city. Thats when she gets involve in prostitution. I also think the stepfather is another problem in the story, because without him Lakshmi's family would have more food and Lakshmi wouldn't have to face prostitution.

I also think that the main problem is $money$. If they were wealthy, and maybe even if her stepfather wouldn't gamble, she wouldn't have gone to "Hapiness House".
